Winter Sun Cycling Holidays
Escape from the UK’s cold, wet and windy winter weather, to the sun-drenched Western Algarve, from October to March.
With so many sunshine hours each year, it is little wonder that the Algarve has become such a favourite with British holidaymakers. Add in clean, unspoilt beaches with some of the best cycling routes and finest golf courses in Europe and it’s easy to see why so many customers return time and time again.
Peter Ward – former international major event organiser and club rider – spends several weeks in the Western Algarve, together with his wife Nora, during the winter
months.
Previously, during the UK’s cold weather months, they have cycled overseas in Spain, Majorca and the USA; but both now agree that this particular area in Portugal is the
best location for warm winter sun seekers. Add to this the region’s quiet, well surfaced country roads, picturesque villages and a host of charming seaside resorts, and a near-perfect cycling destination is created.
Most recently, Peter has stayed at the cycling-friendly Jardim DoVau Resort beachfront apartments – situated on a secluded bay, close to the popular resorts of Praia Da Rocha and Alvor – not far from the lively town centre of Portimão.
Terrain that suits all cycling styles
The Western Algarve region is suitable for cyclists of varying standards of ability, as
well as non-cycling families and friends; from pedal-easy riders, and those who
enjoy travelling further distances, to more competitive cyclists who are in search of
challenging routes. It is also ideal for both ramblers and walkers, with scenic routes
along beaches and the dramatic Atlantic coastline cliff tops.
